The Arts Society Skills Teaching Residency @ The Marchmont Silversmithing Workshop

This residency has been generously supported by The Arts Society.

This residency offers an established Silversmith based in the UK a chance to work in the Marchmont Silversmithing Workshop (MSW) for 2 weeks. The residency is for two weeks, undertaken together or as two 1-week visits between the last week of March and the end of April. Suitable dates can be confirmed upon selection.

Included in this residency:

  • 2 days paid teaching per week (4 days in total) £1116

  • Stipend of £500 (to be used towards travel and subsistence)

  • Self-catering accommodation will be provided on site a short walk from MSW

  • Use of the 5th bench and shared workshop tools and equipment

Please note that NO metals or materials are included in this residency, you will need to organise these yourself

This opportunity is open to established Silversmiths based in the UK who have been in business for a minimum of five years.

This opportunity provides an established Silversmith with a residency that combines time for professional development as well as sharing skills. This residency will introduce new skills to the MSW tenants while deepening their understanding of silversmithing processes and techniques.

The fifth bench in the workshop dedicated to residencies is the workbench of the late Master Silversmith Graham Stewart, whose generous gift of tools and equipment was the catalyst for this new home of Silversmithing in Scotland.

Applications for the Art Society residency close on 20 January 2023. The successful applicant will be selected by the Board of Trustees of The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust.

The successful applicant will be notified by 2 February 2023.

As part of the residency, you will work with the SGT to plan and deliver an in-person event at MSW for a group of The Arts Society members allowing them to engage with the MSW silversmiths, learn about your teaching during your residency, and see first-hand the impact of your time spent on residency.

SGT requests that you contribute to a podcast capturing your journey as a silversmith and your time spent at MSW. SGT is developing a series of podcasts which will be available on platforms like Spotify/Apple Podcasts which will give insight for a broad audience of the creative practises of silversmiths, illustrating the importance of both creative and professional development and how the sharing of skills and experiences impact on the future of the sector.
